Suspiria (2018) – Nadia Sawalha & Family Horror Movie Review (SOME SPOILERS)

The original Suspiria TRAUMATISED Mark in the 70s, so, what better than traumatising himself & Maddie with the remake?!

Suspiria (Latin: [sʊsˈpɪria], lit. “sighs”) is a 2018 supernatural horror film directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by David Kajganich, based on the 1977 film directed by Dario Argento. It stars Dakota Johnson, Tilda Swinton in a triple role, Mia Goth, Angela Winkler, Ingrid Caven, Elena Fokina, Sylvie Testud, Renée Soutendijk, Christine LeBoutte, Fabrizia Sacchi, Małgosia Bela, Jessica Harper, and Chloë Grace Moretz. Harper, the lead in the original film, appears in a different role. Set in 1977 Berlin, the plot follows a young American dancer who enrolls at a prestigious dance academy plagued by unusual occurrences.

A remake of Suspiria was announced in 2008 after Guadagnino had acquired the option from the original film’s writers, Argento and Daria Nicolodi. Guadagnino offered the project to director David Gordon Green, but it was canceled due to financing conflicts. In September 2015, Guadagnino confirmed his plans to direct, with the film described as an “homage” to the 1977 film rather than a direct remake. A new screenplay was drafted by Kajganich, who had written Guadagnino’s previous project, A Bigger Splash (2015). Principal photography for Suspiria took place in late 2016 and early 2017 in Varese and Berlin. The score was composed by Radiohead singer Thom Yorke and the dances were choreographed by Damien Jalet.

Suspiria premiered at the 75th Venice International Film Festival on September 1, 2018. In the United States, it was released in a limited release by Amazon Studios in Los Angeles and New York on October 26, 2018, followed by Halloween screenings in select cities before opening wide on November 2, 2018. It will be released in the United Kingdom by Mubi on November 16, 2018.

ORIGINAL FILM:
Suspiria (Latin: [sʊsˈpɪria], lit. “sighs”) is a 1977 Italian supernatural horror film directed by Dario Argento, co-written by Argento and Daria Nicolodi, partially based on Thomas De Quincey’s 1845 essay Suspiria de Profundis (Sighs from the Depths) and co-produced by Claudio and Salvatore Argento.

The film stars Jessica Harper as an American ballet student who transfers to a prestigious dance academy in Germany but realizes, after a series of brutal murders, that the academy is a front for a supernatural conspiracy. It also features Stefania Casini, Flavio Bucci, Miguel Bosé, Alida Valli, Udo Kier and Joan Bennett, in her final film role.

The film is the first of the trilogy Argento refers to as The Three Mothers, which also comprises Inferno (1980) and The Mother of Tears (2007). Suspiria has become one of Argento’s most successful feature films, receiving critical acclaim for its visual and stylistic flair, use of vibrant colors and its score by the prog-rock band Goblin.

Suspiria was nominated for two Saturn Awards: Best Supporting Actress for Bennett in 1978, and Best DVD Classic Film Release, in 2002. It has become a cult classic, and is recognised as an influential film in the horror genre. It served as the inspiration for the upcoming film of the same name, directed by Luca Guadagnino and scheduled for released in the United States on 2 November 2018

the psychotherapist is Tilda, the reason they cast Tilda to play the role was somewhat based on the metaphor of a white old man coming to save people, & instead it’s a woman, something along those lines (like the role of females/males in society) if I find the article I’ll post it- also somewhere I read he also represents psychiatrist Carl Jung, or something like him. But there’s only two men in this whole film (the detectives) so it’s something along those lines. Like you said Mark I think it’s a film that needs to be seen again, it’s so layered with meaning & messages. I’ve seen a lot that it’s a very feminist film & also seem some tweets saying females will love it males might feel uncomfortable (but everyone is different)

Speaking to your comments about the infamous body-bender scene with Olga: the woman who played her is a professional dancer from Russia (like her character), and according to Guadagnino, all of the contortions in that scene were actually done by her.

kdmil2002 says:

This guy said “You didn’t want to go to bed, did you?”  Which must mean they saw the movie at night.  However, people that went to the press viewing of the movie at 8:30AM, said things like, “I don’t know how I am going to make it through the rest of the day and “This has been a difficult day”.  It sounded like the movie put them in a very dark and disturbed mood that did not let up throughout the day.  Who wants to pay money to have that happen?   Even Dakota Johnson said she had to take a break after the movie wrapped up because playing the role had messed with her head so much.  People who really believe in the spirit world would say that they were experiencing the feeling of demonic oppression.  Sitting for 2 1/2 hours and opening yourself to the occult material in the movie is very risky.  I would not do it.

Awesome review/discussion. Really love your channel – it feels very relaxed and casual rather than some other over the top and scripted review channels. Glad you both enjoyed this film as much as I did!
