The Strangers – Horror Movie Review

The Strangers is a 2008 American horror film written and directed by Bryan Bertino and starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman as a young couple who are terrorized by three masked assailants, who break into the remote summer home and destroy all means of escape or calling for help by destroying their car, cell phones, and phone line.

Produced on a budget of $9 million and after two postponements, the film was released theatrically in North America on May 30, 2008. It grossed $82.3 million at the box office worldwide. Marketed as “inspired by true events”, writer and director Bryan Bertino stated that the film was inspired by a series of break-ins that occurred in his neighborhood as a child, as well as some incidents that occurred during the Manson killings (though website iO9 submits there is lack of legitimacy towards claiming the events are inspired as true).

slow motion frustration. . . . . .

Pastalicious Edits says:

I watched this last night for the first time, and I believe it’s one of the scariest movies I’ve even seen…

Nicholas R. says:

I really agree with you in the sense that i too found this movie far more entertaining on the second viewing and even subsequent viewings after that. I find the set of the house and over all setting to be very terrifying. It does not seem all big and hollywood. Unlike a somewhat similar film, the remake of “When a Stranger Calls” where in that film the house the girl is watching and in is just fucking ridiculously huge and unrelatable. This film’s main set lends to it’s realism and over all creepy tones. Awesome sound design and good pacing and building of tension. And bo moments of a character creating some super fictitious weapon comprised of common household items (LOL whenever that happens in a film.) They shake up the design and structure in this film and really make you feel apart of this vicious attack. Also the makers, in a bonus feature on the DVD, refer to this as more of a “Terror” picture than Horror. I get that. Great Video!

Master Chief says:

vey good review

Arne Boom says:

I like your AC/DC shirt +The Death Twitch

fireflyry says:

I think what really makes this movie so great is that we can all relate to the base fear it centers on where as most modern horror is highly, if not absurdly, fantastical and even more importantly escapist from reality.

The personal experience of hearing a strange noise late at night and the unseen and over-exaggerated horror and tension that our imagination cooks up as a result, tip-toeing around the house scared shitless with whatever weapon like implement we can find close to hand while waiting to wack the crap out of the obvious nightmare that surely must be the cause before we find out it’s merely a draft through an open window, trees creaking outside or something as laughable as the family dog sleep farting and snoring.

Yeah…my dog has issues.

More horror writers and directors need to make movies like this as our own imagination, if given the space to, will always conjure up the worst horror that is personal and relevant to us, the individual viewer. Most modern horror is just so in your face and over the top as to be be neutered in regards to creating any real sense of tension or fear, all be it still enjoyable for what it is.

The Blair Witch Project was the last film I can remember as having a similar impact, but I go camping a lot.

Galactic Zombie says:

I loved The Strangers. But I’m a fan of suspense, mood, and atmosphere. I can see how someone wanting more action might not appreciate it as much. But for me, it really worked. I’ll have to give They a look when I can, as I like movies of this type. Good work on the review.

Ray Anthony says:

In my opinion one of the most underrated, underappreciated films of all time.

xxoxia says:

Them (ils) is a GREAT fucking movie. I’m glad you bring that up because not many people have seen it. You would definitely like Eden Lake. If you haven’t seen it, do yourself a favor and watch it. It’s a British horror about a couple who take a vacation out on a lake which is about to be turned into a housing development, and local teens, while being annoying, are approached by the couple and asked to leave them alone. The teens become increasingly annoying and steal the couple’s car. As they try to get the keys back, the man (avoiding getting stabbed) accidentally stabs the main teen’s dog. In a rage, the teens go after the couple, tracking them through the woods, and man, these kids are serious and very realistic. It’s a TENSE fucking movie and the ending just kicks you in the gut, even more than the ending of Them (ils).

Andrew .23 says:

One of my favorite horror movies! This movie is the only horror movie I’ve encountered that truly scares me!

Diego Weber says:

Just as he was talking about home invasion my fucking sister walked up my stairs and it scared the shit out of me

Jason Panic says:

It’s kind of like “Funny Games” too, in a way

Raven House Mystery says:

I agree that Roger Ebert didn’t care for horror films. He pretty much looked down on them and the people who watched them. Check out the Siskel & Ebert special Women In Danger Films from 1980. The full episode is on YouTube.

Thomas Baron says:

I sware to Christ you look like my dad! O_O

Caden Fell says:

Mia says:

THIS MOVIE SUCKS, AND HONESTLY CAN YOU JUST TALK? LOOKING AT YOU WAS VERY DISTRACTING AND COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY. ALSO I DONT KNOW WHY ANYONE THOUGHT LIV -IM ONLY FAMOUS BC OF THE MONKEYFACE I SHARE W MY DAD-TYLER AND SCOTT SPEEDMAN WAS EVER A GOOD IDEA

Naveen Dravid says:

I just paused this movie because I’m watching it for the first time right now and I wanted to hear other peoples thoughts and reactions if the movie cuz I’m all alone in my room and its night and I’ve only made it about 20 mins into it and I’m already freaking out

jon tufino says:

One word. Trash.

Cool Kidd says:

I remember seeing this movie back in 2008, I only seen it once and remembering that I was so scared after watching it. Gotta say this is a good ass movie ☺️

Elver Fossiltoe says:

I could only watch this once. These home invasion flicks are the kind of horror movies that actually scare me, because they could actually happen. It creeped me out!

UptownDowntownNY says:

the audience I’m laughing so hard

Timelord 007 says:

P.S I put this on for my 15 yr old niece who’s also a horror fan & she thought it was a very frightening film.

Nick Siple says:

I thought this film was incredible and think a home invasion terror movie can be more scary because this could really happen to anyone.

It's maiyaaa says:

I LOVE THIS MOVIE SO MUCH

Kissai Sith Jen'ari says:

If anyone’s interested, you may be able to find this movie, both theatrical and unrated versions, on Blu Ray along with The Last House on the Left and A Perfect Getaway for $6.95 at Dollar General. You cannot even order the Blu Ray from FYE as of now.

Corbin Salvador says:

Audiences like that are why I can’t enjoy Movie Theaters

xxoxia says:

I’ve ridden that exact roller coaster, hahaha. That’s Nitro in Great Adventure (six flags), NJ. And if it isn’t, it sure as fuck looks exactly like it.

Christopher Brown says:

Still a better love story than Twilight.
